Full fire preparedness before the latest SOLAS regulations come into force
New SOLAS regulations related to fire protection will soon come into force. As early as July 1, 2018, every vessel will be required to have the appropriate radio equipment on board. Non-compliant vessels may be charged or even suspended from operation.
As early as July 1, 2018, the latest provisions of Chapter II-2 of the SOLAS Convention will come into force. This is the cut-off date after which shipowners with ships built before July 1, 2014, must equip each fire fighting team , operating on board the ship, with appropriate radio equipment to ensure radio communication during fire fighting operations.
Any radio used by a firefighting team should meet the specific technical conditions and standards set by the Convention. A device that perfectly fits the SOLAS guidelines is the SAILOR 3965 UHF radio, which was designed and marketed by the well-known manufacturer of marine radio communication solutions Cobham and which is distributed by Enamor.
The kit has features that allow safe radio communications in the harsh conditions of firefighting operations on a ship.... These include "intrinsically safe" design in accordance with ATEX standards, UHF operating band for better range in the steel structure of the ship, cooperation with audio accessories for hands-free and oxygen mask conversations, large function keys for easy change of settings even with protective gloves, durable battery, CTCSS option and built-in voice feedback option when selecting communication channel, red color of the housing - suggesting use in fire actions.
Failure to comply with SOLAS regulations can result in high costs. Fines can exceed as much as $20-30,000 per day, and losses related to suspension of operations and delays - $100,000. Thus, the right equipment will not only help in the proper protection of the vessel from failures and fires, but also in avoiding the above-mentioned penalties.
The choice of radio set can result in the exposure of both crew, fleet and business. Buying the right equipment is therefore crucial and should not be put off.
